Trying Hard Not To Blame McCain-Palin…

Saturday, November 1st, 2008

It’s just a coincidence.  That’s what I keep telling myself.

Sarah Palin never implied that Barack Obama hates America — just ask her!  It’s that gosh-darned elite, liberal media distortin’ her words.

And nothing that John McCain has said in the final, increasingly ugly days of his campaign could possibly embolden white supremacists.  How unpatriotic of you to even suggest such a thing!

Yep.  It’s just a coincidence that yesterday in Boulder, Colorado, a 22-year-old Asian American man was attacked by four men, one of whom repeatedly punched him in the face, called him a “Chinaman,” and ordered him to say that he loved America.

Koreans for Obama (despite Japanese-sounding name)…

Sunday, August 3rd, 2008

Wow — I’d heard that there were Korean Democrats.  I just never thought I’d read about one on a Korean website…

Korean-born Ryan Kim recently quit his job at a bank to work around the clock on the Obama campaign, organizing Asian volunteer groups in New York State, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He has met Obama about three times during the Democratic campaign.

At a fund raising event in Manhattan on July 9, he was deeply impressed by Obama when the candidate greeted him in Korean, saying, “Anyeong Haseyo (How are you)?”

Kim says Obama “shook hands with each of us. He greeted me in Korean that way, as soon as he heard that my family name is Kim. It was a real surprise to me.”

Okay, I admit it.  I shudder a little at the thought of yet another non-Asian throwing out the obligatory Asian language greeting.  But then I think back to President Bush’s attempts at speaking Spanish…

Kim also recalled that Obama’s hands were thinner than he had thought, but that he saw the confidence in the candidate that befits the front-runner.

Obama has thin hands?  Somebody alert FOX News immediately!

McCain doesn’t suck at computers — just ask him…

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

In an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, Senator John McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, responded to the suggestion that he is technologically “out of the loop.”

Senator McCain defended himself eloquently:

“I am forcing myself … let me put it this way, I am using the computer more and more every day.”

I figure we’ll see his MySpace page in 2011 or so…

NFW News Alert: Obama’s Half-Sister Is Asian American (Really!)

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

Mind-blowing.

With all the media coverage of Senator Barack Obama and his family, you’d think that it would be more commonly known that the junior Senator from Illinois has a half-sister who is Asian American.

According to Wikipedia, Maya Soetoro-Ng, who teaches high school in Honolulu, is indeed Senator Obama’s half-sister.  She’ll be turning 38 in a couple of weeks.  (Sorry, guys, she’s married.)

Ms. Soetoro-Ng’s mother is Ann Dunham, who is also Senator Obama’s mother.  Ms. Soetoro-Ng’s father (and Senator Obama’s stepfather) is the late Lolo Soetoro, an Indonesian businessman who was married to Ms. Dunham from 1966-1980.

McCain Disses Journalists of Color, Scores Rare Quadfecta

Monday, July 28th, 2008

It’s not every day that a candidate can offend four different ethnic groups at once.  However, Senator John McCain, the presumptive GOP nominee, has proven that he’s up to the task by declining to appear at this year’s UNITY convention, the largest gathering of US journalists of color.  The event was co-sponsored by the following groups:

  • Asian American Journalists Association
  • National Association of Black Journalists
  • National Association of Hispanic Journalists
  • Native American Journalists Association

The only reason given was “scheduling conflicts,” which is about on the same level as Marcia Brady’s “Something came up.”

I can’t imagine why McCain was a no-show.  I’m sure the African American community has long since forgiven McCain for opposing the creation of a Federal holiday to honor Dr. Martin Luther King.  And the Asian American community thinks it’s downright cute that Sentaor McCain may have occasionally used the “G word” (rhymes with kook).

Perhaps it’s part of the Senator’s ongoing effort to distance himself from President Bush, who spoke at the UNITY conference during the 2004 presidential campaign.

News from the Good News / Bad News Front

Sunday, June 29th, 2008

The good news is that he’s a second generation Asian American, who is on the short list for VP.

The bad news is that, to paraphrase the liberal blogosphere, he’s an anti-choice, anti-gay, pro-exorcism nut job who thinks that Intelligent Design represents “the very best science.”

I’m talking of course about first-term Louisiana Governor Piyush “Bobby” Jindal who, scarily, currently enjoys a 77 percent approval rating:

But you be the judge:

I must admit, I’m a little torn on this one…
