Best-Laid Plans

Sunday, May 29th, 2011

Five years ago, I was paying $50 a month to a gym, and $200 a month to have people come mow my lawn.

It occurred to me one day that pushing a lawnmower around was probably at least as much exercise as running on a treadmill.

So I quit the gym and bought a mower.

Here it is — five years later.

I’ve gained 20 pounds.

The grass in front of my house is a foot tall.

And for the life of me, I can’t figure out what happened to that $250 a month.

Thought for the Day

You know you’re spending too many hours a day in front of your computer when your stomach starts to look like a butt.

Register to save a life this month

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

Register online to become a bone marrow donor — you might just turn out to be the miracle that someone is praying for.

Asians for Miracle Marrow Matches, a non-profit group based in Los Angeles, is launching an innovative campaign called “Marrow March Madness.”  You can register anywhere you have access to a computer and an internet connection.  There’s no blood test — only a cheek swab.

Here’s how to sign up:

  1. Click here: National Marrow Donor Program Website
  2. Enter this promo code when asked: CTFHOPE03 (03 as in zero three), and the $52 fee will be waived.  (This code is only good for March 2009.  If you register in a later month, change the last two digits of the code accordingly — 04 for April, 05 for May, etc.)
  3. Wait for your cheek swab kit to arrive in the mail.
  4. Swab yourself, mail it in.

Once you’re registered, you’ll only be contacted if it looks like you might be a match.

It only takes one matching donor to save a life.  Whose life?  Take a look:
